Paul wrote in Ephesians 4:4, “There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling.” In verse five, he wrote, “One Lord, one faith, one baptism.” From these verses, we see a pattern of the idea of “oneness” not many. We see the pattern of “unity—not confusion and division.” 1 Corinthians 14:33 says, “For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace.” The context of this passage is about the problems of speaking in tongues that caused confusion in the Lord’s church at Corinth. However, the reality of this verse is that God is not a God of confusion. It contradicts His nature. So, in Matthew 16:18, Jesus made a prophetic statement. He said he would build His church. He did not say churches. He also said in that same verse that the gates of hell would not prevail against it. Notice, he said it, not them to refer to his one church.
