Sometimes life throws punches at us that seem relentless. It seems as if the harder we try to fight back, the more difficult the challenge becomes. And the most demanding situation is when we endure suffering that we do not deserve. This is the challenge Joseph faced. He was well loved by his father, but his brothers did not like him. They did not like the fact that their father seemed to have loved Joseph more than he loved them. This led to an attitude of disdain for Joseph. Their jealousy caused them to put Jospeh into a pit and eventually sold him into slavery. But through the pain, the humiliation, and the hurt, Jospeh held onto hope even while he was hurting. Joseph was anchored in Biblical hope, not mere optimism that says, things might get better but by Biblical hope which declares God is faithful even if things get worse.
